About

Bio

Julia Sebastian is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Northern Kentucky. Julia teaches in the Art & Design program at Northern Kentucky University. Originally from Lexington, KY, Julia earned her undergraduate degree from Transylvania University and Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati. Her work is inspired by art history, Medieval manuscripts, and research to highlight injustices throughout religious history that created barriers for women’s equality that are still felt today.

Artist Statement

I create artwork that pinpoints key influencers in religion who chose to discriminate against women because of the belief that God prefers men. I focus on Western religion, specifically Christianity because of its global impact beginning before Common Era with Biblical stories and teachings set in the East, spread through colonization, and stands as the most widely practiced religion in the world. I collaborate with history to highlight the catastrophic impact individuals had on the treatment of women in the church, creating the foundation for undue gender roles that are still problematic to this day.
